2008: Time to get my wings… (01 January 2008)

December 31st, 2007 by jorgemilano-therainmaker

“Out with the old and on with the new.”

As cliché as it seems, it isn’t an easy thing to do. But I decided to do it today. And today isn’t any ordinary day, today is New Year’s Day.

2007 was an alright year for me. It had its ups and downs. But it was this very year that my life seemed to be more like a completely unpredictable reality TV show, or a well-scripted soap opera (not that I watch…). Not that I was the main character in a sense, but life itself was sort of experimenting with me and stretched me to my limit. Through that, I realized that limits are just like walls, they can be broken down. But all in all, 2007 was a 60% bad and 40% good year for me. There really was a lesson to be learned in the past 365 days, andso I deeply scrutinized my whole self to really check if there is something that I need to resolve to make 2008 a great year.

As of now, I have etched my New Year’s Resolution onto my heart, mind, and a Post-It note to remember what my expectations towards myself as I forge on to what’s in store for all of us this 2008.

Enemy Within Cyberspace: The Spread of Viruses through the use of USB Drives (11 November 2007)

November 11th, 2007 by jorgemilano-therainmaker

I remember when I got my first thumb drive back in high school. I stored all the important files (documents and images…) and music files (since the thing was an mp3 player). Even though it had the storage size of 1 GB, it was large compared to nowadays….

But there was one time when I checked my drive (plug and play, of course.), it seemed to have lost a portion drive space even though there was nothing stored inside. This puzzled me at first, then I realized that my thumb drive had been overrun by worms and trojans (F.Y.I., computer viruses). I thought of ways to get rid of these unwanted files like using anti-viral programs, reformatting and defragmenting. But the more frequently I used my thumb drive, the more exposed it is to a huge number of viruses from different computers or even worse, the World Wide Web. Remember that the Internet is a mesh of data circulating in cyberspace travelling across the globe for everyone to see access, and in that mesh of data includes computer viruses. This is like AIDS (Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome) for computers, since the motto of any thumb drive is "plug and play."

getting tech’d… (01 November 2007)

what if an EMP were to strike at this moment? if that were to happen i would ask my self every two seconds: "what do i do?"

this is what i want to point out. we are extremely reliant on the technology, predominantly electronic technology, we have at this moment to do everything we need to or want to do. computers to do our work, sophisticated forms of transportation to take us from one place to another in  probably 30 mins or less, and a library of electronics to keep us entertained with games and music.

i’ll admit that it is hard to live without all of these stuff but i can learn to teach myself to do things without the assistance of these

return of the space cowboy… (30 October 2007)

October 29th, 2007 by jorgemilano-therainmaker

i once thought that as you grow older in life, the smaller the world becomes in your view. but the world to me is still as vast as the ocean… in my family, i’m the only one with the "isip-bata" syndrome. i’m not sayin’ that i still act, play, and do stuff like a child, i just want to point out that we shouldn’t trade our innocence and worldly enthusiasm for seniority and adult wisdom… most people would mistake this for naivity or irresponsibility. but i think that accepting this trait could be the first step to maturity (by experience…)

also, accpeting this keeps one’s ambition burning alive… (by experience though…) but you’re kinda wonderin’, "why is this titled ‘return of the spcae cowboy’?" it’s because i’m the type of guy who would keep going the extra mile.

random thoughts… (23 October 2007)

the past few weeks were full of mixed emotions…

but i would seem that melancholy has engulfed my soul mostly during that time period… looking back and forth at my life. seeing what’s ahead and how far i’ve gone in this journey called life. it’s sort of a sign that you’re getting older…
